We're going to go from THIS to
Requested by Forever Fan at the Forever Four Forums.
Unfortunately, I don't remember the exact way I created this particular avatar's coloring, but it was requested for the rounded corners:

1. Open your picture (or, in other words, your base) in GIMP; be sure it's 100x100 pixels
2. Go to Filters>Decor>Round Corners
3. Set the edge radious desired, then be sure that no other options are checked than 'Work On Copy'
4. Your rounded-corner base will open up in a new window; add brushes, text, etc. as you wish
